Hawthorne Max-V vegetarian caps provide a significant quantity of the flowering tops and berries of the hawthorn tree, Crataegus oxyacantha, Standardized to provide 4.5 to 5.5 mg vitexin. Rich in bioflavonoids, extract of hawthorn has been known for centuries as a potent cardiovascular tonic, improving the function of the heart and circulatory system.
Hawthorne flowering tops and berries have been used for about two centuries for the treatment of digestive problems, kidney and bladder stones and as diuretic. Science has recently discovered that Hawthorne may possess the ability to dilate the blood vessels to support healthy circulation. Hawthorne may also help to regulate heart rate and thereby help to regulate blood pressure.
Hawthorne contains many biologically active flavonoid compounds that improve circulation by dilating coronary blood vessels. Dilation of these blood vessels consequently increases blood, and thus oxygen supply to the heart. Components of hawthorn extract have also been demonstrated to inhibit angiotensin-converting enzyme, thus reducing blood vessel constriction. Hawthorn extract normalizes heart rate, as well as providing a positive inotropic effect. Theseproperties of hawthorn, together with its vasodilatory and diuretic effects, are the basis for its use in cardiovascular support.
Hawthorn can help improve the amount of blood pumped out of the heart during contractions, widen the blood vessels, and increase the transmission of nerve signals. Hawthorn also seems to have blood pressure-lowering activity, according to early research. It seems to cause relaxing of the blood vessels farther from the heart. It seems that this effect is due to a component in hawthorn called proanthocyanidin. Research suggests that hawthorn can lower cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL, or "bad cholesterol"), and triglycerides (fats in the blood). It seems to lower accumulation of fats in the liver and the aorta (the largest artery in the body, located near the heart). Hawthorn fruit extract may lower cholesterol by increasing the excretion of bile, reducing the formation of cholesterol, and enhancing the receptors for LDLs. It also seems to have antioxidant activity.
Each capsule of Hawthorne Max-V contains 250 mg of Hawthorne and makes it a useful nutritional adjunct for those who wish to support their heart and circulatory system.
